1960's

  • Tom Walsh built the Plaza Motel in Brewer, Maine.

  • Later that decade he built the Quality Inn across from Paul Bunyan in Bangor, Maine and the University Inn in Orono.

  • Then came the Lobster House Hotel & Restaurant.

1970's

  • Erin, Inc. was formed with Tom's friend Larry Mahoney and they built their first Holiday Inn on Odlin Road in Bangor which led to the purchase of the Holiday Inn Waterville, ME and Nashua, NH.

  • Tom Walsh also built his first Sheraton with the Bounty Lounge in Bath, ME which was the start of Thomas T. Walsh, Inc. and added the Sheraton name to the Paul Bunyan Hotel in Bangor, which both hotels later became Holiday Inn's with Killary's Restaurant and the Bounty Lounge.

  • He then built a Holiday Inn in Sherbrook, Quebec, which he sold to Common Wealth hotels.

  • In 1975 Ocean Properties, Ltd. was started with the purchase of the Holiday Inn's Highland Beach, Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach, Marathon and Naples, Florida from U.S. Life Insurance.

  • The Seacrest Hotel in Delray Beach was purchased, which would be torn down (later to become the Holiday Inn Delray Beach and then converted to Marriott which is what it is currently today).

  • In 1978 hotels were purchased from U.S. Life Real Estate Company in Durango, CO and Kayenta, AZ from All American Leisure Properties, Inc., which eventually became a subsidiary along with a Holiday Inn hotel in Dallas, TX.

  • The Holiday Inn Alamogordo was purchased from Holiday Inn and Southwest Leisure Properties was formed and later the Holiday Inn Sarasota and Jacksonville were purchased from Holiday Inn.

  • The Belle Glade Holiday Inn was purchased and a contract to operate two hotels in South Bay.

  • The Treasure Island Hotel was leased and later purchased to become a Holiday Inn.

  • The Sheraton Boca was purchased which later became a Holiday Inn, which later became the home of OPL's office along with a shopping center.

1980's

  • In 1981 the Holiday Inn in Boca Raton was built with the largest Bounty Lounge and Domenic's Restaurant.

  • Other purchases included the St. Petersburg Holiday Inn and a roadside Hotel in Bar Harbor which became the Days Inn

  • Holiday Inn Pirates Cove in the Bahamas was purchased from Holiday Inn which became our biggest hotel.

  • The Holiday Inn Bar Harbor was built as well as Holiday Inn Bradenton, Holiday Inn Boynton Beach and Holiday Inn Chinle. Holiday Inn Delray Beach was built which later became a Marriott.

  • The 1980's brought a new relationship with Marriott and Ocean Hospitality to operate hotels that were not owned. The Andover Marriott was built, then Peabody Marriott in MA, Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Portland, Maine Marriott's were also built.

  • Waterbury was built

1990's

  • In the 1990's the first franchised Fairfield Inn opened in Bangor, Maine. Fairfield Inn Bar Harbor was not far behind.

  • Purchase of an office in New Hampshire for accounting and purchasing.

  • College Park in the Washington, DC area was purchased.

  • The Holiday Inn in Montreal was purchased leading to the purchase of Atlific Management Company which managed Holiday Inn Winnipeg, Lake Louise Hotel and Venture Inns. This was the start of Atlific's growth which has become the largest management company in Canada.

  • The Albuquerque Hilton was purchased and½ was split into a Fairfield Inn.

  • Later in the decade the Courtyard Marriott relationship started with Albuquerque, NM; Page, AZ, Myrtle Beach, SC; Naples, FL; Coral Springs, FL; Brunswick, NJ and Portsmouth, NH and the Springhill Suites in Tampa, FL were all new buildings with the Disney Courtyard in Lake Buena Vista being purchased.

  • Paddy's Restaurant was purchased and named after Tom's Dad in Portsmouth, NH and the Residence Inn Portsmouth.

  • Later the Montreal Chateau Champlain was purchased to become a Marriott and a 22-story hotel was purchased that became a Courtyard.

  • The Latham in Philadelphia that was being operated by Ocean Hospitality was purchased.

  • The 1990's brought Tom Walsh to Key West where he purchased land and an island (Sunset Key). A relationship with Hilton resulted in two great hotels and a cruise port.

  • The Samoset Resort & Golf were purchased in Rockland, Maine.

  • In Canada, the Ottawa hotel and a London apartment building were purchased and made into a Courtyard Marriott and a Residence Inn.

2000's

  • 2000, the start of a new century Tom went to Salt Lake City, Utah to build a new Marriott, while purchasing and renovating one of the oldest structures in New Hampshire, the Wentworth by the Sea and branding it with Marriott.

  • On 9/11/01, he purchased the Park Entrance Hotel in Bar Harbor, Maine at an auction.

  • The Spanish River Inn in Delray Beach, FL was purchased from a time share company and converted to a Residence Inn.

  • He also purchased the Holiday Inn Boston.

  • In Toronto, the Carlingview Hotel was purchased and a Courtyard and Residence Inn by the airport were built.

  • The Sheraton Jensen Beach, FL was purchased and changed to a Courtyard. The Jupiter Beach Resort was also purchased.

  • A new relationship was started with the Boulis Family with hotels in Key Largo - Marriott, Courtyard, Holiday Inn and Marina del Mar as well as Bayside Inn in Key West. The Howard Johnsons hotel in Hollywood, FL was purchased and converted to a Marriott.

  • The Marriott in Victoria, British Columbia was built.

  • The Ameristart hotel was purchased in Portland, Maine and the Golden Anchor Inn was purchased just after the Bar Harbor Club. While the Club was restored, the hotel was replaced by Harborside Hotel and Marina.

  • The Sheraton Suites, Key West was purchased with a new Starwood relationship and the Hilton became a Westin in Key West.

  • The Lido Beach Holiday Inn and the Longboat Key Hilton were purchased. This led to a purchase of the Lido Beach Resort.

  • Vero Beach Holiday Inn became part of the family as well as the Holiday Inn Stuart, FL.

  • The Weather Station became a bed and breakfast and Banana Bay Key West was purchased.

  • Boston's on the Beach Restaurant and Bermuda Inn were purchased in Delray Beach, FL.

  • By the end of the decade things had changed - 18 hotels were sold but the management had been retained as well as a percentage of ownership.

  • 11 partnerships with different long-time owners and partners were gone with the sale of these partnership hotels. The associates were still in place.

  • The new income led to the purchase of the Sagamore Resort in Lake George, New York and the Sandpearl Resort in Clearwater, Florida, with a previous purchase of land in Clearwater later brings the Opal Sands Resort as well as Seaside Inn, Clearwater.

  • Sudsco, a central laundry facility and warehouse were built in Riviera Beach, FL

  • The Westin Montreal hotel and office were finished with a new tower building and the renovation of historic buildings.

  • The Resort at Longboat Key Club in the Sarasota area of Florida was purchased with over 500 acres of golf, tennis, restaurants and marinas.

  • The West Street Hotel in Bar Harbor, ME is finished.

  • The Lake Placid Lodge in New York is purchased.

  • Residence Inn in Auburn, ME was built.

  • The following year the Edgewater Beach Resort in Naples, FL and the Sandcastle Resort in Lido Beach are purchased. Treasure Island Beach Resort was built soon after.

  • A new partnership was formed with George Schotts that led to a new Residence Inn in Bath and a Homewood Suites in Augusta, Maine. This has led to ownership in 8 other existing hotels.

  • Breakers on the Beach in Delray Beach, FL was purchased.

  • The Holiday Inn Highland Beach was renovated and re-launched as the Delray Sands Resort. Two brand new properties open on Florida’s Gulf Coast: Opal Sands Resort in Clearwater Beach and Treasure Island Beach Resort in Treasure Island.

  • Zota Beach Resort opens in Longboat Key, Florida

  • Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa opens in Hutchinson Island in Jensen Beach, Florida.

In all, over the years the different companies, corporation, and limited partnership have produced 110 hotels, as well as many office buildings and shopping centers, housing developments, homes, marinas, golf courses, boats, restaurants, clubs, lounges, tennis centers, cruise ports, ice cream shops, laundries, lobster pounds, employee housing, spas, cable companies, HOA's, retail shops, purchasing companies, real estate development, casino projects, boat building, construction companies, landscaping companies, accounting companies, insurance captives and two charities {Wentworth). Erin Inc., TTW Inc., North South Corporation, Ocean Properties Hotels Resorts & Affiliates, All American Leisure Properties and at least 100 more companies, owners, partners, friends and family have made this possible.

I want to thank all the affiliated companies, associates, managers, partners, friends and family for years of dedicated service and working together. Ocean Properties Hotels Resorts & Affiliates, is still making waves but 99% of the hotels are owned and managed by different corporations, partnerships and LLC's. Many of the associates have been at the hotels since they were built and there are dozens of managers that have over 25 years with affiliated hotels.
